IU Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble

The Indiana University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble is one of the oldest collegiate ensembles of its kind in the United States, with roots dating to a tuba ensemble founded by William J. Bell at Indiana University in the mid-1960s. Harvey Phillips continued and expanded this tradition, bringing the ensemble to national prominence through performances, the creation of TubaChristmas, Octubafest and other innovative tuba ensemble initiatives, and appearances on PBS television. Over the years, the ensemble has performed throughout the United States and around the world and has been featured at International Tuba-Euphonium Conferences and United States Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshops. Continuing IU’s long-standing tradition of excellence in tuba and euphonium performance, the ensemble presents a diverse repertoire ranging from transcriptions and established works to contemporary music and new compositions. Comprised of students from the Jacobs School of Music, the ensemble provides an opportunity to develop musicianship, chamber ensemble skills, and collaborative artistry while showcasing the expressive possibilities of the tuba and euphonium. Today, the Indiana University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble carries forward a tradition of excellence that has helped shape the role of these instruments in collegiate music for more than six decades.
